What is Leave No Trace?

The Leave No Trace Trainer Course develops environmental ethics through a practical methodology that has been developed and tested in the national park system of the United States (www.lnt.org) and is now spreading n Asia, Africa and Latin America. The program begins with minimum impact techniques that apply to all ecosystems, including daily life in the big city. Mr. Diego Allolio, an instructor of the National Outdoor Leadership School (www.nols.edu), is a certified Master of the Leave No Trace (LNT) program and he organizes the LNT courses in Argentina with the supervision and support of NOLS Patagonia.

The LNT Trainer Course is designed for anyone who spends time in natural areas, particularly professionals who work in the outdoors in some capacity. It includes 16 hrs of instructing and 10 hours of experiential learning in an outdoor setting, including one night of camping outdoors. This course can be conducted in any ecosystem or place including wetlands, the coast, the dessert, a national park, the mountains, etc. The curriculum includes the seven LNT principles, teaching techniques and environmental ethics. The program designed to educate trainers who will then teach their Leave No Trace knowledge to others.

The classes include activities on teaching techniques & learning styles in order to prepare the participants for instructing Leave No Trace on their own. All students are expected to participate, present the principles in a creative way and prove they can be effective teachers of LNT, proving that they can replicate the LNT message to others. At the end of the course, participants receive an official Diploma from the National Outdoor Leadership School, which is the educational arm of the Leave No Trace non profit Incorporated organization.

These courses are not designed to instruct specific outdoors skills such as mountaineering, river crossings, camping techniques, etc. However, because the class is held outdoors, these skills are often included. Participants should be in good physical in order to get the most out of the course. For more information on the program, visit: http:://WWW.LNT.ORG or HTTP://NDR.NOLS.EDU, for the Spanish version.

Bibliography

The National Outdoor Leadership School and Leave No Trace Inc., a Non-Governmental Organization based in Boulder, CO, provide the teaching material for this course. This material is based in the scientific research of ecology specialists at NOLS Outreach, who study the impacts that recreational users make in wilderness areas. Two of these professionals, Jeff Marion and David Cole, have developed a new model for protected land management, called Limits of Acceptable Change, which is taking over the older model of Recreational Load Capacity.
