| meridies® Navigation & Orienteering course is designed for both outdoors professionals (e.g. biologists, geologists, etc.) and the enthusiast (adventure racers, hikers, etc.). This is a good option for those who want to work intensely on navigation skills without committing to a longer course.
The program has a strong emphasis in terrain reading and maps interpretation at different scales. We utilize an experiential learning approach in our teaching methodology in order to connect the general theory with practical exercises that enhance lasting learning.
This training can be run in different natural areas, but preferably with clear topographic features and 1/100.000 or lesser scale maps. This workshop usually does not include other skills instruction such as mountaineering, river crossings, camping techniques, etc. However, participants will end up hiking a considerable distance and will better enjoy the exercises if they are in reasonable physical condition.
These courses include three modules: a theory introduction in town and two practice days in the field, which could be spread in a timeline of 15 days, for a total workshop time of two and a half days. The program includes a minimum of 8 hours of theory and 20 hours of practice in mountain terrain. At the end of the course, participants receive a certificate of completion, which explains the curriculum and hours devotes to learning and practice.
After this workshop, participants should be able to:
- Extrapolate the three-dimensional aspects of actual field features
from a two-dimensional map.
- Use route finding and off trail navigation, in order to mitigate
and minimize hazards while traveling independently in the backcountry.
- Travel as a self-supported team without depending on outside
help.
- Travel confidently in backcountry without trails or posted
signs to reach a specified point.
- Feel self confident when making navigational decisions as part
of a team.
- Apply minimum impact traveling practices while navigating off
trail as part of a deeper personal connection with nature.
